Three Wardrobe basics to buy during Winter Sales.

pexels-photo-54206

Winter sales are about to start in most clothing stores and although I’m not an advocate of waiting for it to go on sale before buying a garment, here are three items that you need in your winter wardrobe and can be bought on sale.

  1. Coat.

Metalicus Austin Textured Coat $199 (was $299.95)

A good quality coat in a timeless style will last much longer than just one winter.  A beige trench coat or a classically styled wool coat can be almost an investment, so buy the best quality you can afford. Which is even better if the coat is on sale. Make sure the colour and style will mix and match with your current wardrobe – you will want to be able to wear your new coat with everything. Look for a flattering fit and length.

2. Jeans

Sale time is the perfect time to buy a high quality pair of jeans. When trying on jeans, remember that they will give almost a full size, so make sure the fit is super snug. Generally speaking, if you want a dressier pair of jeans, choose dark or black denim, but for a casual look, go for a lighter or faded denim. And yes, no matter what your age is, you can wear ripped jeans, while they remain on trend. For solving problems often encountered with buying jeans, read my blog here.

3. Leather boots.

Sandler Lennox Black Glove boots at Myer $174.96, reduced from $249.95

Not only will you be stepping out in style with a brand new pair of stylish leather boots, you’ll also have a spring in your step if you managed to get them at discounted price!

One of the most important thing about choosing boots, besides comfort, is the correct length. A flattering boot will lengthen and slim your legs, while the wrong boot will do the reverse. Choose a style that fits with the clothing you already own – if you have a wardrobe full of classic clothing, a pair of cowboy boots are not going to get much wear!

Jeans – Problem Solving Style Advice

Jeans

Jeans – A Wardrobe Essential

No matter what age or shape you are, a flattering, comfortable pair of jeans in your wardrobe is an absolute must -have. If you don’t own a pair that look AND feel great, then read on – I’m looking at the various problems I’ve encountered fitting jeans to my clients (I am a Personal Stylist), and sharing some of my solutions.

The Muffin Top – Style Solution

To prevent tummy spillover, look for a mid-rise style with a wide waistband. Jeans designed for women, rather than teens are usually a better option. I recommend Katies Fashion Ultimate fit jeans. Wearing a top that is looser around the tummy, but fitted at the bust will work, if you currently own a pair of jeans that give you a muffin top.

Plus Size Curves – Style Solution

A straight leg or boot-cut style with some stretch will be both slimming and comfortable. Mid rise is also more comfortable for you. Choose a darker denim, and avoid embellished pockets and ‘whiskers’ across the front.

Flat Bottom – Style Solution

Flat bottomed girls – you make the rockin’ world go ’round! And here’s how to make your bottom look a bit rounder…..  Avoid flat low pockets, instead look for slit pockets or flap pockets. Pockets that sit higher will be more flattering.

Large Hips, Small Waist – Style Solution

Look for stores that cater for women and not teens. Many have jeans with hidden adjustable elastic waistbands, so you get fit in the hips and at the waist too! No more gaps!

Long Legs – Style Solution

Who would think having long legs would ever be a problem? But, it can be hard to find jeans long enough. Cuffing your jeans is right on trend this season, which makes it easier, but you can also buy unhemmed jeans from Jeanswest and hem accordingly.

From Desk to Dinner in 15 Minutes

The silly season is here! We are all busy at work, and our social lives have moved from first gear into full throttle.

Here’s my quick guide on how to dress for those days when you rushing straight from work to dinner or drinks.

Desk – Wear a simple dress that flatters both your shape and colouring. A well cut blazer and sensible nude heels will complete the outfit.

3 Ways to Style a Long Cardigan this Winter

Long line cardigans seem to be in every clothing store this season, but how do you style them without looking like someone’s granny or a dumpling? (OMG! Is anyone else thinking of granny’s Golden Syrup dumplings right now?). I’m not going to deceive you – if you are short, you are going to find it hard to make it work, but it can be done. If you are a tall, rectangle shaped girl, then rejoice! This look has your name written all over it! Here are my three favourite ways to style a long line cardigan this season.

1. Wear with skinny jeans. If you need to balance out your lower half then tuck your jeans into boots – this will visually lengthen your legs. If you are short then heels are a must and also look for an asymmetrical hemline.

2. Wear over a dress with a belt or even as a dress. Be as adventurous as you like – you can have a bit of fun with how you drape and tuck.

3. Mix up the hemline lengths. If you have legs the world needs to see, then wear with shorts, mini skirts or dresses. This is also a great look for shorter women.

Here’s a few tips to help you – keep your bottom half fitted i.e. skinny jeans, leggings and and fitted skirts or dresses. However, IF you are very tall and thin, (lucky you!) then wearing a long cardigan with boyfriend jeans and ballet flats or sneakers is a great look and you can get away with it. You can also wear bulkier knits, but the rest of us are better in lightweight fabrics. Wearing a block colour underneath your cardigan is lengthening and slimming. How to ROCK your Baby Bump for a Stylish Pregnancy

pregnancy before

Before

pregnancy after

After

Expectant mothers glow. It’s such a special time in a woman’s life and it shows in their skin, clear eyes and hair.

With these few tips on what to wear, you can dress to show off your baby bump in the most flattering and stylish way, and avoid feeling like a bit of a frump…..

1. Belt Up! A belt emphasizes where the belly starts, and gives you some shape.

2. Maxi skirts are cool, comfortable and cute!

3. Wear black – it’s always slimming.

4. Layer with thin fabrics.

5. Work the maxi dress.

6. Choose tonal block colours over big, busy prints to streamline your        figure, making it appear longer and leaner.

7. Trade heels for flats, platforms or wedges, especially in the third trimester, when your bump may upset your balance.

8. Accessorize!

Here’s a few things to avoid….

1. Bulky fabrics.

2. Tops that are too short in the front.

3. Tight bras, panties and waistbands.

4. Shoes with ankle straps, if your feet swell.

5.  Overly baggy pants – they might be comfortable but can give the illusions that you are bigger than you really are.

talea after

Talea 27 weeks

Shorts – Jeans West Maternity range $59.99

Singlet – Katies $14.95

Long Mesh Cardigan – TEMT $24.95

Shoes – Williams $69.99

Necklace – Lovisa $39.95

Bangles – Lovisa $19.99

Clutch – Colette $24.95

Style Notes

Always look to highlight/showcase your best features! Talea has long, long gorgeous legs, so it would be criminal not to show them off.

Wearing black on both the top and bottom half (singlet and shorts) with a long line jacket over the top elongates the figure, making you visually leaner.

A statement necklace draws the eyes towards the face, and the bright aqua clutch adds a pop of colour to the monochrome look.

Style Notes

Laura has gone from a size 26 to a 10-12 in the past 12 months, due to serious illness. Before she lost weight, she felt most comfortable wearing black and took no pleasure in shopping for clothing.  It is common for ladies who have undergone a drastic weight change to feel like they’ve lost their sense of style, and Laura expressed these feelings. After completing the workshop, she had a much clearer idea that she leaned towards a boho style of dressing, and that is how she has been styled.

The belt beneath the bust defines where her baby bump start, and adds shape to her figure. A statement necklace draws the attention up towards her face, and highlights her decollete.

A denim jacket always looks great with a maxi, fits in with the boho style, and in Laura’s case helped cover up loose skin on her upper arms.

Comfortable tan platform sandals add height, creating a longer and leaner looking figure.

Finally, a tan bag large enough to slip a couple of nappies, bottles etc into, complete the whole look.

Margarita 31 weeks

Cotton Shirt – Rockmans $39.99

Maxi Skirt – Katies $49.95

Singlet – Jeans West Maternity range $14.99

Necklace – TEMT $9.95

Bracelet – TEMT $9.95

Shoes – Spendless $49.99

Bag – Colette $49.95

Style Notes

Margarita is having her third child and at 31 weeks is sporting the largest baby bump on the day.

Maxi skirts are a great option during pregnancy, as long as they have stretch. The maxi skirt can be worn at the top of the bump, as Margarita is doing, with a light cotton shirt knotted beneath the bust.

The skirt can also be worn low, below the bump, with longer tops (fitted are better).

The cami has a scoop neckline, which is flattering during pregnancy, and the shirt worn unbuttoned but knotted below the bust creates a deep V, also flattering.

Margarita has a long torso and shorter legs, which is why she is wearing the skirt above the bump. Below the bump would make her legs look shorter.
