Spend, Splurge or Save – How to invest in your Wardrobe for the over 40’s

As women move past their twenties and thirties into their forties and beyond, shopping in the fast fashion clothing stores tends to become more difficult – the fit is often not quite right for a mature woman’s body shape and the styles are often not quite appropriate. Because clothes shopping can be more expensive when you’re forty plus, here’s my guide on whether you should spend, splurge or save on a few wardrobe ‘must -haves’.

Bra – Spend Your neckline is one of your assets, as is the area from beneath your bust to your navel. A well fitted bra will enhance and highlight both these areas, and will also eliminate the dreaded ‘back boobs’ look. Both Target and Bras n Things have qualified fitters in store, and you also have the option of private consultants from companies such as Intimo coming to your home for a more private fitting.

Jacket or Blazer – Splurge A well cut jacket that fits perfectly, suits your body shape, and works back with  the rest of your or your wardrobe will be worth it’s weight in gold. Whether casually styled with jeans, tee and scarf, or worn with skirt or pants in the office, you are sure to get a few seasons wear out of it.

Jeans – Spend The most important factors when buying jeans are fit and comfort, not the price. Denim is a hard wearing fabric, so unless you just have to have them, there is no benefit in spending $$$ on jeans. Chain stores Jeans West and Just Jeans have very well trained staff and you should use them to help you find the right fit for you. I can help you with advice on the right style for your body shape.

On Trend/Seasonal Pieces – Save By ‘on trend’ and ‘seasonal’ I mean both colours and styles that are unlikely to be around for more than a few months. These pieces are fantastic for keeping your wardrobe up to date and fashionably stylish, but you don’t need to spend a lot, because fast fashion stores like Temt and Valleygirl are choc-a-block full with garments at very reasonable prices.

Handbag – Splurge Nothing says ‘class and style’ more than a great quality handbag. Buy the best you can afford. If you can only afford one, then get it in black, nude or tan, depending on which of those colours will go best with your wardrobe.

Costume Jewelry – Save Using colourful costume jewelry can really set off an outfit when used to enhance and highlight both your clothing and your curves. But, there’s no need to spend a lot of money – like on trend/seasonal pieces, costume jewelry styles change quickly. Colette by Colette Hayman and Lovisa are great places to shop for these pieces.
