Leggings – The Good, The Bad and The ‘Hooha’ Ugly.

legging warning

When I posted this picture on my Facebook page (Paterson Personal Styling) it went viral! On a page with only around 600 likes, it reached over 35000 people, had over 350 comments and was shared more than 200 times!

Clearly, wearing leggings as pants is regarded as a big (if not the biggest) fashion faux pas or our times. So why do we still see so many women wearing leggings as pants?

Leggings are super comfortable.

No matter how comfortable your favourite pair of jeans are, leggings will be more comfortable.

But for the comfort of others, do not wear your leggings like you would wear your jeans!

The Number One rule when wearing leggings is to make sure your top is long enough to cover your hooha.

legging how to

On various social media sites, I’ve seen some suggest that if you’re young and slim you can get away with breaking the number one rule.

No. You cant. And here’s why:

When you break the number one rule and wear a shorter top, your hooha actually become the centre of attention. Yes, really!

Friends, family, work mates and complete strangers will have their eyes drawn to that particular part of your body. They’re not being weird or creepy – its an involuntary reaction, it’s because you have made it the focal point of your outfit.

But, here’s the good news:

Leggings, long knit, scarf and boots look fantastic in Winter.

The leggings will slim the legs and offset the bulkiness of the knit. Leggings also work beautifully with layering. Here are a few of my favourite legging outfits found on Pinterest.

Treat leggings more like thick tights and less like jeans or pants, and the world will be a much more pleasant place.

Fifty and Fabulous! How to Dress Stylishly at 50 and Beyond…..

mutton

If there is one thought that can strike terror into almost every mature woman’s heart it’s the fear of being described as mutton dressed as lamb. None of us want to age, but hanging in there with clothing designed for twenty something girls is not a good look. The trick is to learn how to be stylish and sexy by showing the right amount of skin and avoiding the mutton dressed as lamb tag.

So, the first rule is this: it’s cleavage OR legs. Never both.

Showing off your decolletage is a fabulous way to draw attention upwards towards your face. Choose scoop, V, or square necklines over very low cut styles.

Or…Show some leg. During winter, slim your legs by wearing opaque tights underneath knee length skirts and dresses. Knee length is either just above, on or below the knee, and is generally the most flattering length. Wearing nude shoes in summer will lengthen your legs, and in winter, choose a colour that matches your tights for the same effect.

Upper arms can be a problem area for the mature woman. Sheer sleeves in fabrics such as lace or chiffon are a great option all year round. In winter three quarter length sleeves appear to slim the arms and expose the wrists. Wrists should always be highlighted – so expose them in Winter, and in Summer draw attention to them (which also draws attention AWAY from your upper arms) with bangles and bracelets.

Put your best foot forward by wearing fashionable shoes. You can choose comfort and style with a few tips here. https://patersonpersonalstyling.wordpress.com/2015/04/02/5-steps-to-choosing-comfortable-heels/

Update your hairstyle, regularly. A modern hairstyle can take years off you!

Keep black away from your face by wearing a lower neckline – if it’s too close to your face it can drain a mature woman, making you look tired.

Don’t wear shapeless or baggy clothing – find out your body shape and dress appropriately. But avoid too tight as well by looking for soft fabrics that drape your body and give you shape, but are not clingy.

Accessorise with jewellery, pendants and scarves. Dame Judi Dench (below) looks amazing simply by following all these rules.

Clear your wardrobe of old and dated clothes. The minute you put them on, you’ll look old and dated too.

Finally, at your age, you probably have a pretty good idea of who you are, and you should dress to reflect your personality. You’ll be more confident and comfortable.

Five Reasons You Have a Messy Wardrobe.

Did you know that most women wear only 20 percent of their wardrobe 80 percent of the time? That means that four out of five garments taking up space in your wardrobe only get worn very occasionally – if at all! And that’s criminal!

If you have a wardrobe that is bursting at the seams, I know the chances are that you will be having trouble finding something to wear. Yes, the more clothes you have in your wardrobe, the harder you will find it to put outfits together.

This is because you are guilty of the following closet crimes:

1. There is clothing in your wardrobe that doesn’t fit anymore. I don’t care what you paid for it, how many times you’ve sworn you’ll lose weight and get into it again etc. etc. It does not belong in your wardrobe anymore.

2. There is clothing in your wardrobe that you haven’t worn in years. See above.

3. There is clothing in your wardrobe that no longer suits your lifestyle. If you’ve gone from being a high flying corporate business woman to fully retired you no longer need all those business suits. Keep one and move the rest out.

4. There are brand new items in your wardrobe. Never worn. With tags on.  Usually bought on a whim, or on sale. If you can’t work out why you haven’t worn them, and you have a lot, you will benefit financially from having a session with me, an experienced and professionally trained Personal Stylist.

5. You have other things in your wardrobe. A wardrobe is for what you wear. Clothes, shoes and accessories. Nothing else.

If you are guilty as charged of the above, here is a link to my step-by-step guide to cleaning out your closet.

How to Choose a Flattering Neckline

Lovely neck

The right neckline on your top or dress will flatter you from the bust upwards, and draw attention to your face. It will make your neck appear longer and more slender. In most cultures a long, slender neck is recognised as an attractive part of the female body, and some go to great lengths to attain this. (Pardon my pun)

Long Neck

Without being this drastic, it’s not too difficult to enhance your neck by choosing the right neckline for your body shape and bust size. If you’re not sure of your body shape, please see my previous blog https://patersonpersonalstyling.wordpress.com/2015/04/22/whats-your-body-shape/

There are so many necklines and different ones come in and go out of fashion almost as regularly as the ocean tide.

Here’s a diagram showing the most popular necklines followed by my guide on what you should choose based on your body shape. I suggest you ‘pin’, save or print this so it’s always handy:

Necklace for necklines

So, by following my guidelines, in three simple steps – 1. determine your body shape and bust size 2. Choose a flattering neckline and 3. Choose an appropriate accessory – you should be able to visually elongate and flatter your neck and decollage without having to resort to this!
