What’s Your Body Shape? – Find out by Answering 5 Quick Questions!

body shapes

If you follow me on  Facebook, then you’ll be aware that I often recommend garments as being perfect for a particular body shape.

Which is all well and good, but – and it’s a BIG but (not a big BUTT)- I’ve found that most of my clients either do not know their body shape or have made an incorrect assumption. On many occasions I’ve been told by clients that they are definitely ‘pear shaped’ – a triangle, when their measurements clearly prove that they are an inverted triangle. Dressing for the wrong body shape can be disastrous!  Take the case of an inverted triangle (busty and broad shoulders) dressing as a triangle – her broad shoulders and big bust would be over emphasized, making her look very top heavy and potentially quite masculine.

Here’s a simple quiz you can take to help you determine your actual body shape. It’s not going to be completely accurate – for that you need me, of course!

Wearing some close fitting clothing, stand in front of your mirror and answer these questions:

1. Look at the width of your shoulders and your hips.

a) Shoulder and hips are the same width (hourglass, oval or rectangle)

b) Shoulders are wider than hips (inverted triangle or oval)

c) Hips are wider than shoulders (triangle or oval)

2. Facing front on to the mirror, do you have a discernible narrowing at the waist?

a) Yes (hourglass, inverted triangle or triangle)

b) No (oval or rectangle)

3. Where is the bulk of your weight?

a) Tummy (Oval)

b) Bust (inverted triangle)

c) Bust, Hips and thighs (hourglass)

d) Hips and Thigh (triangle)

e) No one area in particular (Rectangle)

If you have got the same answer after these questions, you’re sorted!

But if not, these last two questions might help…….

4. What size is your bust?

a) Large (hourglass, oval, inverted triangle)

b) Small (rectangle or triangle)

5. When buying separates what sizes do you buy?

a) Larger sized tops than bottoms (inverted triangle, oval)

b) The same (hourglass, rectangle, oval)

c) Larger sized bottoms than tops (triangle)

Have a look at your answers – the majority rules!

Remember, there is no right and wrong, or good and bad when it comes to your body shape – it is what it is – and my job is to make you look and feel beautiful, stylish and comfortable in your clothes. Not a bad job, aye?

3 Ways to Style a Long Cardigan this Winter

Long line cardigans seem to be in every clothing store this season, but how do you style them without looking like someone’s granny or a dumpling? (OMG! Is anyone else thinking of granny’s Golden Syrup dumplings right now?). I’m not going to deceive you – if you are short, you are going to find it hard to make it work, but it can be done. If you are a tall, rectangle shaped girl, then rejoice! This look has your name written all over it! Here are my three favourite ways to style a long line cardigan this season.

1. Wear with skinny jeans. If you need to balance out your lower half then tuck your jeans into boots – this will visually lengthen your legs. If you are short then heels are a must and also look for an asymmetrical hemline.

2. Wear over a dress with a belt or even as a dress. Be as adventurous as you like – you can have a bit of fun with how you drape and tuck.

3. Mix up the hemline lengths. If you have legs the world needs to see, then wear with shorts, mini skirts or dresses. This is also a great look for shorter women.

Here’s a few tips to help you – keep your bottom half fitted i.e. skinny jeans, leggings and and fitted skirts or dresses. However, IF you are very tall and thin, (lucky you!) then wearing a long cardigan with boyfriend jeans and ballet flats or sneakers is a great look and you can get away with it. You can also wear bulkier knits, but the rest of us are better in lightweight fabrics. Wearing a block colour underneath your cardigan is lengthening and slimming. 5 Steps to Choosing Comfortable Heels

I absolutely love high heels. I believe they are the magic wand of style – as soon as you put on a pair of heels, you gain height, look slimmer, your tummy flattens and your boobs and bottom look better. It’s not just Cinderella that a pair of heels can work magic for, although I’m not promising Prince Charming will appear if you follow my tips.Cinderella-Louboutin-sale-Cinderella-1

I’m intolerant of uncomfortable shoes these days, so I’ve taught myself what to look for when choosing a pair of heels.

.Although heels will never be as comfortable as a pair of slippers here are a few things to look for when choosing heels, beyond the height of the heel and a proper fit, that will lift the comfort factor.

1. HEEL PLACEMENT The centre of the shoe heel should sit directly in line with the centre of your heel. For this reason, the red shoe will most likely be more comfortable than the black shoe.

2. PLATFORM SOLES Platforms beneath the sole of your foot add comfort. The thicker the sole of the shoe the more comfortable it is likely to be to wear. Adding gel inserts is also helpful. For this reason the patent leather shoe should be more comfortable than the other.

3. THICKER HEELS Thicker heels give greater stability, making them more comfortable. Wedges work for this reason, providing the complete sole of the shoe is in contact with the floor. The deeper red heel will be the more comfortable of these styles.

4. SOFT SOLES Choose heels with soft rubber or leather soles which give and move with your feet, rather than hard soles like wood or hard plastic. The sandals below are the better choice for comfort.

5. STABILITY If a shoe is very easy to slip on, it will also slip off very easily when you are walking. Look for sling backs or ankle straps in summer, and pumps or boots in winter. The black wedges will be a lot easier to walk in than the blue. If you find yourself slipping, add gel inserts to the shoe, beneath the sole of your foot.

Following these five steps should ensure that you end up with the most comfortable heels possible, that you can wear for hours, without having take them off. I know it’s unavoidable sometimes, but it’s a shame to see a beautifully dressed woman taking her heels off because of discomfort towards the end of an evening. Still, bare feet are better than bear feet…..
